Mr. Deepak Anand takes over as Managing Director

Mr. Deepak Anand, aged 55 years, who took over today as Managing Director, Mangalore Chemicals & Fertilizers Limited, a U B Group company, is an Honours Graduate in Economics from Delhi University and a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India. He has over 32 years senior managerial experience in India and Overseas with large companies.

He commenced his career in the Management Consultancy Division of A.F.Ferguson & Co. the then largest firm of chartered accountants and management consultants in India. During his 15 years (1973-1988) with AFF, he rose to become a Director in the Firm and directed assignments in India, Tanzania, Malaysia, and the Middle East. He was responsible for opening the Dubai office of the Firm and was based in Dubai for 6 years.

Mr. Anand joined the UB Group in 1988 as Senior Vice President, Corporate Planning and Coordination. During his tenure in the Group he held various senior management positions including Head of Liquor Manufacturing, CEO of Kissan Food Products Ltd. prior to its sell-off to the Unilever group and CEO of UB Exports, the export division of United Breweries Ltd. He moved to UB Global Corporation Ltd (UBGCL) on its incorporation in 1994 and was faced with the myriad challenges of this new company.

UBGCL was formed as the international trading arm of the UB Group’s diversified businesses in Alcoholic Beverages, Engineering, Batteries, Processed Foods, and Pharmaceuticals. Consequent to the collapse of the USSR, UBGCL had to reinvent itself and Mr. Anand played a pivotal role in designing the strategy. UBGCL became the largest exporter of Alcoholic Beverages from India in 1996 and continues to do so till date. A new business, leather shoes, emerged and in a span of five years, UBGCL became one of the five top exporters of full leather shoes. Under Mr. Anand’s leadership, the UBGCL portfolio of products has grown significantly and there has been a shift from traditional commodities to value added brands and manufactured products. UBGCL has become a recognized name for quality and delivery in the international markets in which it operates.

The turnover of UBGCL went up from about Rs. 20 crores in 1994-95 to about Rs. 130 crores in 2004-05 respectively.

The management of MCF beset with the constraints of a 30 year old vintage plant, stringent fertilizer policy of the Government and cash flows frequently becoming critical on account of its seasonal operations will be a different challenge for Mr. Deepak Anand. With such a vast managerial and administrative experience of more than 32 years, Mr.Deepak Anand is hopeful of taking MCF to greater heights for the benefit of all its stakeholders, including the Karnataka farmers.
